Advocating for COVID-19 Impact Response

The 2020 Legislative session started with a palpable sense of hope — lawmakers met in January with hundreds of millions of dollars to allocate and a desire to help families and children — and ended with a sense of fear for how COVID-19 will impact our state. So many things are still so uncertain in our state and our nation.

Throughout this time of uncertainty, the Foundation for Tacoma Students will continue to steadfastly support youth, families, and nonprofits in Tacoma and Pierce County. Our advocacy will look a little different through this crisis: We’ll be advocating for relief for youth, families and nonprofits most impacted by the pandemic. Here’s what you can expect:

We will communicate big policy changes and what they mean

We are tracking legislation at the local, state and federal level and we will keep our partners up to date on how the legislation will impact our community. If Congress passes a federal stimulus bill, you can look to us for information on how the bill will impact nonprofits and childcare providers, how to access aid, and links for resources.

We will advocate for relief

We will work with policymakers to ensure they understand the impacts to our community and will recommend policy changes that will help the most. We believe that every child should succeed in school, and career, and in life and will advocate for policies to ensure that a pandemic doesn’t derail that for any child.

We will organize action campaigns

There is a national desire to help, and we can always use support! We will use Phone2Action and social media channels to get the word out on critical initiatives where the public’s support via petitions, letters, calls, or tweets can help us most. We will elevate community voice

We will need your help to succeed. For now, there’s one key way you can help: We need to hear stories of the impact of COVID-19 on your work and the individuals you serve.

We are collecting these stories to highlight the need our public institutions must address over the coming months. Whether it’s an individual childcare provider navigating new regulations, teachers connecting with students remotely, or creative alternate programming models, we want to hear how you and your community are facing the pandemic and how we can help.
