You will hear the vision and mission of “A Mindful State”\, and hear real stories from youth around what support they need from adults around them.\nFollowing this lunch conversation\, there will be a series of summer professional development opportunities led by youth that will help Expanded Learning Opportunity programs and school staff\, support them where they are as they navigate the impacts from the pandemic\, trauma\, and interruption of their social emotional journey. \nThis is an inclusive\, collaborative effort. SUMMARY:Black Employee Network Scholarship DEADLINE
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share that BEN has launched a $20k scholarship for students of Black or African descent! \nAccess to receive a higher education provides an individual with the tools\, knowledge\, and strategies to improve their lives and impact their community. This is particularly important in the Black community where access to higher education can be inaccessible. In partnership with Amazon Future Engineer (AFE)\, World Wide Operations (WWOps)\, and Tech U\, BEN created this scholarship as one additional step that Amazon can take to help eliminate barriers and provide access. \nThe scholarship is geared towards high school seniors who plan to continue their education and pursue a computer science (CS) or supply chain-related field of study. Recipients of the scholarship will receive $5\,000 per year\, for four years\, towards college tuition\, plus a connection to industry mentors within BEN. Details to sign-up to be a mentor will be shared soon. \nApplications are now open until 1 pm on March 4\, 2021.

Registration required. \nWe will send the zoom link to your email address one hour before class begins.  \nRenee Simms is an associate professor of African American Studies and contributing faculty to English Studies at University of Puget Sound. Originally from Detroit\, she received her B.A. in literature from University of Michigan\, a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School\, and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Arizona State University. Her writing appears in Callaloo\, The Oxford American\, Ecotone\, Literary Hub\, Southwest Review\, North American Review\, The Rumpus\, Salon and elsewhere. She is a 2018 National Endowment for the Arts creative\nwriting fellow\, a 2018 Bread Loaf fiction fellow\, and has received support from Kimbilio Fiction\, Ragdale\, Vermont Studio Center\, and PEN Center. Her debut story collection is Meet behind Mars (Wayne State University Press).

He is also an editor of The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hopand he also co-curates The BreakBeat Poets series for Haymarket Books. Marshall co-wrote the play No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks with Eve Ewing\, produced by Manual Cinema and commissioned by the Poetry Foundation. He also wrote the audio drama Bruh Rabbit & The Fantastic Telling of Remington Ellis\, Esq.\, which was produced by Make-Believe Association. His last rap album\, Grown came out in 2015 with his group Daily Lyrical Product. His most recent release\, FINNA\, has received rave reviews.

DESCRIPTION:The mission of Julia Robinson Math Fest is to inspire students to explore the richness and beauty of mathematics through games\, and activities that encourage collaborative\, creative and interactive problem-solving.\n \nThe festival will bring together students from local middle schools\, high schools\, and colleges to engage in various thought-provoking activities in a social and cooperative atmosphere. Participants can choose from several tables of math-themed games\, puzzles\, and activities where a facilitator (Faculty and students from UW Tacoma\, Tacoma CC\, Pacific Lutheran University\, Tacoma Public Schools\, Engineers\, etc ) will be happy to work with them for as long as they wish while providing support and encouragement. These social interactions have shown to be a critical component in motivating students.

Come listen to poems that explore the solitary mind\, and stock up on encouragement to keep creating. This workshop includes prompts to get you writing through the distance of a community in the middle of a pandemic.  \nAbby E. Murray is the 2019-2021 poet laureate for the city of Tacoma\, Washington. Originally from the Pacific Northwest\, Abby has moved around the country and taught writing in Colorado\, Georgia\, Alaska\, New York and Washington. Her first book\, Hail and Farewell\, won the 2019 Perugia Press Poetry Prize and was released in September 2019. Previous chapbooks include How to Be Married after Iraq (Finishing Line Press\, 2018)\, Quick Draw: Poems from a Soldier’s Wife (Finishing Line Press\, 2012) and Me and Coyote (Lost Horse Books\, 2010). \nSince 2016\, Abby’s been the editor of Collateral\, a literary journal publishing work concerned with the impact of violent conflict and military service beyond the combat zone. The journal is published twice a year but also runs workshops in Pierce County (Washington) year round for those interested in writing in the wake of war\, including veterans\, trauma survivors\, active duty service members\, military families\, refugees\, and civilians.
