The City of Tacoma, in partnership with the Foundation for Tacoma Students, has launched a Request for Proposals (RFP) as part of an $800,000 funding initiative to expand youth programming and cultural events in East Tacoma (District 4). This initiative is the result of the City’s Participatory Budgeting process, where over 12,000 residents voted to prioritize enriching experiences for young people beyond the school day while celebrating the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
The initiative will distribute funds in two categories:
- Cultural Programming: $400,000 total, supporting 5-8 organizations to sustain three years of cultural events.
- Youth Programming: $400,000 total, funding 5-8 organizations to provide one year of out-of-school programs.
“Every young person deserves the opportunity to explore their passions, build confidence, and shape their future,” said Gray Sterling, Deputy Director of the Foundation for Tacoma Students. “With this funding, we are strengthening the network of support for our youth, ensuring that learning and growth extend beyond the classroom into vibrant community-driven spaces that uplift, empower, and inspire them to thrive.”
The selection process will be led by community groups active in youth activities and cultural celebrations in East Tacoma, ensuring that funding decisions reflect the needs and values of the community. Priority will be given to programs that serve youth ages 4-18, particularly middle and high school students, and organizations with strong ties to East Tacoma.
Eligible organizations include:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofits
- Community groups with fiscal sponsors
- Neighborhood Business Districts and Councils
